Sometimes, it is easy to start with the idea of writing, but to make this really happen,  there are some previous steps and tips to make this journey more enjoyable and realistic. To begin your writing path, it is essential to know how to start, you need to understand your purpose and gather ideas. You can find some useful  tips in this article here

Why create a writing routine?

A writing routine is how you create consistency and truly become what you can call a writer. It helps you activate your creativity daily, challenge yourself,  and,  most importantly, produce  actual work and gain experience.  Routine means consistency, and despite the difficulties, that is what allows you to accomplish more.

When building a routine you face several challenges: the challenge of adding something new to your day,  the lack of ideas or even motivation. However the act of just insisting on consistency and trying to dedicate some of your time to this new project,  you arrive somewhere.

Things to consider while creating a writing routine

  • Consider the right time

To make routine work,  it is necessary to have realistic expectations and organization based on your daily tasks and non-negotiable busy times such as work, social compromises, household chores, etc.  First step in building a habit is considering a time when you are not interrupted,  have no distractions,  and- most  importantly, a time when you feel physically and mentally willing to focus.

  • Prepare for writing

You cannot have productive writing  if your mind is occupied  with something other than the world that you are creating on paper. You might  be worried, stressed, or even sad, but if you know how to fully enter into your creative world, you can distance yourself from external factors and let writing consume you.  To help yourself entering in this state of mind you can try meditation, breathing exercises, or even physical exercises to clear your thoughts and enhance concentration.

Another factor is preparing your workspace to be as comfortable and distraction-free as possible. Ensure that water, coffee, or snacks- if you like– are easy to reach.  This way  you can make full use of your time instead of postponing work.

  • Set Goals and  Evolve Gradually

One common mistake when starting a habit is setting unrealistic goals. We may begin with excitement that allows us to produce for hours, but that does not mean the same motivation will persist every day. Sometimes the work can be more difficult and time-consuming, sometimes, your physical and mental disposition will not allow you to produce as much, or write the best texts– and that is normal. We cannot expect excellent and significant results right away, but we can create small projects and steps that lead us to daily progress.

Do not start with a very long working time, or many completion goals. Start slowly, and increase according to the ease with what has already been imposed.

- Some goals to consider when starting a writing routine:

  • Write for 40 minutes, not two hours;

  • Complete 2 articles per week, no four.

  • Write now, edit later - the work does not need to be perfect as soon as your writing session is over.

  • Set  long deadlines to finish work– give yourself a week to finish one article, or even more if necessary.  You set the due date.

Do not forget

  • Not every day will be perfect.

There are good days and bad days, even when you are creating. One day you may feel that you do not like your work but then you revisit it in the next day or week you realize it is actually very good–  or just need a few adjustments.

  • If you are a beginner, do not compare your work to that of experienced writers and authors.

Instead of comparing your work against people who have many years of study and experience, focus on learning from them. Study their techniques, habits, their advice, and try to apply what looks more reasonable to you.

Building a writing routine is the first step toward establishing your writing career. The learning and experience you gain with a constant routine is what really makes you have progress and visible results.  These simple strategies will make your routine both complete and productive, and you can always adjust things around to create comfort and motivation. Writing, as any other profession, is about learning and improving– and it all starts it with one simple thing: routine.
